The Game Changer
I’ve been standing sideways since 2003. I love it. I love it so much that it’s become a part of who I am. On any given day riding allows me to connect with the earth, friends, complete strangers and myself – sometimes all at once.
On a spectacular bluebird day my first season in Colorado a dedicated friend with enormous patience met me on the hill to give me my first lesson.
It totally changed my life but, at the time, I had no idea. Looking back, those few hours with Ryan were essential in propelling me toward the direction of my vocation.
It’s amazing that an activity like riding a snowboard, something that has now become part of my identity, didn’t meet me until my mid-twenties. It makes me wonder what else is out there I’ve yet to experience that will change the game.
It also makes me feel like we shouldn’t underestimate the power for positive change each one of us has lurking inside. If something as simple as teaching a friend to ride a snowboard can have such a tremendous impact, imagine what else we can accomplish.
I’ve never told my buddy how influential that day was on me. But you bet your ass I’m thinking of him every time I tighten my bindings for the day’s first run.
With seven weeks left in the 2010 – 2011 season I’m dedicating this week’s entry to a few moments I’ve had standing sideways this season all taken with my camera phone in celebration of the experience called snowboarding.
Thanks for checking in!
